Jay Park Listed as Composer and Producer for U-KISS' New Album

Jay Park’s comeback as a solo and promotions were successful. His expulsion from 2PM and the related problems that made Korea noisy last year took away the light from this talented man. But the Jay Park that came back after a year was relatively calm.

He gained a passable mark in terms of quality for his trendy pop-style tracks of ‘Take a Look Back’ ‘Take A Deeper Look’ (the journalist made a mistake here..) and the title track, “Abandoned”, won first place two weeks in a row right after comeback. But Jay Park’s expression was not 100% satisfied.

“I was definitely concerned about it not appealing to the public. But I thought that this was a chance for me to do what I want and show that nothing else mattered as long as the music was good. I wrote the lyrics for all seven tracks and participated in the composing of six of the tracks. I participated in the album artwork and the music video with detail. I’m satisfied enough with the recognition of my coming back as a singer-songwriter, instead of an idol.”

It is evident that the fandom, which became more unified in this turbulence, took part in his success. In an objective point of view, this is also why his popularity is not continuous, though it is very explosive. However, it is true that critics about Jay Park has met their turning point. Here, his well-made friendships cannot be ignored.

“I hear things like, a guy who used to be an idol changed so suddenly. But it’s apparent that hip-hop and R&B are my music styles. I have been listening to them since I was young and it’s a part of my life. Of course, it helped that friends like dok2 and The Quiett were by my side.”

It is a huge luck for an artist to meet a great partner. If that partner is a friend who knows you well then there’s nothing more to say.

“The priority is to become friends. I’ve met Ne-Yo and Musiq Soulchild. It is significant to meet world-famous musicians but I don’t think that I can make music with them if I can’t become friends with them. To be honest, I didn’t really know Korean hip-hop. I only knew TigerJk. Then I met these friends I became a fan of their music and I wanted to work with them. dok2 and The Quiett are friends like these.”
To Jay Park, official promotions are not more than having fun with his friends. Actually, Jay Park’s activities including club performances with dok2 and other musicians, international tour, performances with AOM, were not done as a marketing strategy or for a specific purpose. They take up a big part of his life.

“There is always only one thing I dream of. I’m not talking about buying a nice car or a nice house. I just want people around me to be happy and live well. I want to enjoy life with my friends, let my parents be worry-free and buy games for my brother that he likes. These are things I can do even without huge success.”

Unlike the goals of his life, he has a big and definite aim about debuting in America. Jay Park limits this time to within two years.

“I am confident, to be honest. I don’t believe that the important thing is choosing which artist to work with, knowing the trend or how to promote. I think it’s the sincerity. I believe I can make people feel my sincerity when I make music in America. I have been listening to pop music since I was little and I know their music. I wrote my first rap in English and I already have a manager to work with me in the States. It is a fact that language is an important factor. It’s true that I need this (language) to communicate my sincerity. Two years; and that’s looking at it long. I think it will be enough.”

We decided not to talk about 2PM. Not only because he already talked about it in many other interviews, but also because he is a musician that looks forward instead thinking about the past.

As a composer and a producer, I worked on Ukiss and Sori’s new albums, and will also hold a concert. I made a lot of songs already so I think my 2nd album will be done soon. To be honest, I’m a bit annoyed since I have so little time for music because of music filming schedules etc. It’s also a relief that my promotions ended quickly (laughs).”

Oricon Style Magazine: Interview #05, 2PM

Weekly 2PM #05
Let's have a 2PM lesson

2PM's Honest Thoughts: The Secret Reports
We'll find out their true nature!!

2PM will debut in Japan on 18 May. Starting from the 3rd round of interviews, we're going to do a close up on each member to further source out their true nature. For the 5th round, we're zooming in on Wooyoung and Junsu. Please check out what the other members have to say about them too.

~*WOOYOUNG*~
The moodmaker
who cheers up everyone around him!

"Instead of hiding it, I want to show everyone what I'm really like as a boy of my age!"

---What made you interested in the entertainment world?
WOO: I auditioned when I was 15, but I started dancing at a much younger age. By performing self-choreographed dances at school assemblies and such, I always had dancing and music by my side no matter what I did.

---You're a vocalist in 2PM as well. Do you take any particular steps for singing?
WOO: I love black music and R&B, so that has made some influence on me. I try to bring out that taste in my vocals when I sing. I also take great care of my throat by not speaking for 2 hours in the morning, and doing throat stretches for about 30 ~ 40 minutes everyday. I avoid sour and salty food, too.

---How very stoic! But with your cheery disposition, you have the presence of a moodmaker within the group, don't you?
WOO: Do I? I don't consciously try to make people laugh, but I do enjoy an atmosphere where everyone is laughing and having a good time, so maybe I naturally become more cheerful too. I'm actually shy and bad at expressing myself, though. (laughs)

---Really?
WOO: I'm bad at conveying my real emotions, so even if I, say, gave my family a call, I wouldn't be able to tell them I was happy to hear their voices, even though I really was. I don't think that's a good thing, so now I do my best to put on a bright expression and convey my true feelings to others.

---From now on, how would you like to express yourselves as a member of 2PM?
WOO: I think we have a manly image as "beastly idols" in Japan, but I hope people can see more of our true nature in the future. Instead of hiding it, I want to show everyone what I'm really like as a boy of my age.

The members talk: what kind of person is Wooyoung?
CHAN: His amazing sense of humor is addictive to everyone around him!
JUNSU: Adorable and cute!
JUNHO: Basically a funny person!
KHUN: A mother.
TAEC: Funny.

~*JUNSU*~
2PM's lead vocalist
A genius who can even arrange songs!

"I announced to my family, 'I want to be a singer!' when I was in the 3rd grade of elementary school (laughs)"

---You listened to Stevie Wonder's songs when you were a child. Was that the reason why you aimed to be a singer?
JUNSU: That's right. I was really moved by the song "Lately" when I heard it for the first time in the 3rd grade of elementary school, so I chose music as my career path. That's probably when I announced to my family, "I want to be a singer!" (laughs) After that, I listened to a lot of Teddy Pendergrass and female vocalists like Whitney Houston.

---What was the first song you ever composed?
JUNSU: I was a 1st year in high school. The medium tempo ballad I composed for music class was my first.

---You're the lead vocalist in 2PM, but what do you consider important when expressing your vocals as a member of the group?
JUNSU: First, you have to think of it as a performance. It's not just dancing and acrobatics, but also singing, with a combination of harmonization and rap. I think this is a performance that can't be done without all 6 members. Moreover, when we perform together, it feels like we can exchange a great amount of energy with each other. We have to do a lot of intense things, but I can get my energy from them.

---In that case, what value do you place in your solo activities?
JUNSU: The value in doing music that's of a different taste from 2PM's, I think. I'm also writing my own songs, after all. There's probably the importance of balancing group and solo activities as well.

---Could you tell us the good and bad aspects of your personality?
JUNSU: My good points are that I'm positive and optimistic. My bad point is that I tend to forget things. (laughs)

The members talk: what kind of person is Junsu?
CHAN: In one phrase: "A funny person who loves music" (laughs)
JUNHO: Great at singing!
WOO: He can read the mood in the air and make things fun.
KHUN: An uncle in the family. (laughs)
TAEC: Prankster.

The sensational six have finally debuted in Japan!
2PM
After 5 weeks of analyzing 2PM's true nature, they have finally made their debut with "Take Off" on 18 May. Now we'll ask all the members about how they watched dramas and studied the language for their first Japanese lyrics, as well as how they feel about their Japan debut! Please check out the interview as they share their thoughts befitting the last of this series.

"We'd like to showcase not just our images as stars, but also our more ordinary and natural side."

---On 18 May, you will debut in Japan with a Japanese song. What kind of impression do you have of the music scene here?
TAEC: Japan basically has a diverse range of music genres. There's idol-ish pop songs, hip hop songs, dance songs, ballads, rock, R&B...... there's all kinds. That's why we also have to adapt to that sort of diversity by showing various sides of ourselves, not just the one we've always focused on. I'm looking forward to that.
JUNHO: I get the feeling that Japan's music market is quite matured. Even though there's so many genres, it's amazing that each and every kind of music has its own loving fans.
CHAN: It seems like all the artistes have their own unique personalities and they use that original individuality to appeal to people.

---Since you're on a new playing field, are there any challenges you'd like to take on?
TAEC: Rather than consider new challenges for ourselves, we should focus on how to infiltrate Japan's music scene. For example, our Korean debut single, "10 out of 10 (10/10)" has relatively simple harmonization and choreography. We started from a catchy performance, before gradually widening our range to show people that we're capable of other things too. That's why I think it might be a good idea to kick off with something that's easy to imitate.
JUNHO: Also, each of the members are modeling and appearing in dramas in Korea, so it'd be great if we could take part in different activities in Japan as well.

---For the recording of "Take Off", was the language the hardest part?
TAEC: It was. The Japanese pronunciation was difficult. It was especially so for me, because I do the rap, and the progression of words in rap is fast.
JUNSU: Right, that must've been tough.
TAEC: Yeah. I suffered the most 'cause I had to speedily pronounce a language I wasn't familiar with. (wry smile)
CHAN: I had a problem with pronunciation too, but singing is all about expressing emotion that matches the melody, so balancing that expression of emotions with the pronunciation was what I found difficult. That's why I practised with the lyrics written in Korean on the side.

---Did you find the Japanese language interesting while you were singing?
TAEC: I did. It was definitely hard to rap in Japanese, but that didn't discourage me into thinking I was bad at the language. It just fueled my desire to become much better.
CHAN: Take for instance, me using Japanese with a Japanese person. The Japanese person then understands my Japanese and responds in Japanese. When we have that kind of exchange, we'd think, "Ah, we're communicating!" and find the language fun.
JUNSU: Chansung is studying Japanese very seriously.

---What are your favorite phrases in the new song "Take Off"?
TAEC: Junho's part, where he goes, (sings) "Kore wo unmei to~" (This is fate~) It's not my part (laughs) but I love it.
CHAN: For me, it's (sings) "Mahou no kotoba" (magic words). That's my part. (laughs)
JUNSU: I like Chansung's part. The one that goes, (sings) "I'll be" (after a breath) "with you".
ALL: (crack up)
KHUN: I like (sings) "Senaka oshite yo" (Give my back a push). That's my part.
JUNHO: In that case, I'll go for one of the focal points in this song, (sings) "Buddy".
WOO: I like the phrase "Take off". The reason is because no one else has said that. (laughs) Kidding, kidding! I like the melody and chords there.

---What was your first impression of this song?
JUNSU: My first impression was, honestly, that the song needed a more intense impact to it. But as I sang it, I began to get the feeling of exhilaration. That's when I decided it was a good song.

---Could each of you tell us whose singing voice you like, other than your own?
KHUN: I like Junho's voice. I think it's charming.
JUNHO: Thank you. (laughs)
JUNSU: I like Wooyoung's voice. It has a great brazen quality to it. (laughs)
TAEC: I like Nichkhun's voice.
CHAN: It's Junsu's voice for me. Amongst the 6 of us, his voice leaves the strongest impression. He can also hold a note all the way to the end.
WOO: For me, I like all the members' voices. Junsu said my voice sounds brazen just now; is that supposed to be a compliment? (laughs)

---Isn't it good to have a brazen voice? That means it has power to it, right?
JUNSU: (laughs) Sorry, I didn't express myself properly just now. I was trying to say that his voice is husky and wild. It's a compliment, of course. (laughs)

---Can we see a lot of you in your natural state for the DVD?
JUNHO: I think the fans are also curious, so we intend to showcase much more of ourselves. Not just our images as stars, but also our more ordinary and natural side, with the hopes that people can relate to us.
CHAN: Our image as "beastly idols" pertains to our performances. Our casual nature off stage and our strong image on stage - I'd like people to enjoy both sides of us.

2PM, First High Five Meeting Gathers 40,000 for a Queue Over 2 Kilometers Long

With the nickname of "Beast Idols," the 6-member Korean group 2PM held a high five meeting in commemoration of the release of their Japan debut single "Take off" at Pacifico Yokohama in Kanagawa with a crowd of 40,000 fans. Before anyone could enter the venue, [the fans] queued up in a line over 2 kilometers long, to which Taecyeon commented gratefully, "I'm really surprised to see that so many fans have come," and from start to finish they high fived the fans one by one without ever showing fatigue.

The limited first press versions of type A and type B, as well as the regular version of "Take off" each contain 1 random "High Five Meeting! Special Photo Card" (7 in all), and to participate in this event, those who received a member solo card (6 in all) could high five whichever member was in the picture.

Hinting at his desires for their Japan debut single "Take off" that was released on May 18, Taecyeon said, "It really means a lot to us that we were able to debut in Japan. Please support our [single] 'Take off.'" Concerning the catchphrase "Beast Idols," Chansung enthusiastically stated, "I think it's truly an honor. We won't just have a beast idol image in the future; I believe we'll be able to show everyone many more images."

Not too long ago they held their first nationwide tour of Japan '2PM 1st JAPAN TOUR 2011 "Take off,"' and in reply to the requests of fans, they performed an additional concert at Chiba's Makuhari Messe Event Hall, to which Junho said happily: "It was really amazing that we were able to have an additional concert, thanks to all the fans," and in a soft, maknae-like way, Chansung said, "I was pleased that the Japanese food I ate during the tour was really tasty."

Furthermore, when asked what Japanese they've memorized recently, they enlivened the venue with their replies: Taecyeon said, "Issekinichou (killing two birds with one stone)," Nichkhun said, "Minasan no okage de boku wa ureshii desu (I'm happy because of all of you)," Wooyoung said, "Oshare (stylish)," Junho said, "Fuwafuwa (fluffy)," Junsu said, "Chutoro. Not otoro, but chutoro," and Chansung said, "Rakuraku (comfortably)."

In addition, they will make an appearance at the 'JYP NATION in Japan 2011' event to be hold at the Saitama Super Arena on August 17 for 2 days.

The Empty Space Left Behind By The Mighty TVXQ Is Too Big To Fill… SM’s Performance ‘Plummets’

It has been found that the stocks of the listed entertainment management enterprise SM did worse in the first quarter of this year than last year with a sudden 6~8% drop.
Much attention has been drawn to this issue as some are speculating that this drop in SM’s business showings since last year is a result of the reduced number of activities by ‘TVXQ’, who acted as SM’s cash cow.
TVXQ was most active in Japan in May~June, 2009, resulting in a higher amount of income. This income then went through a ‘division of income’ process (approximately 6 months) with the Japanese agency and was mostly added to the first quarter of last year, which explains why the results for this year’s first quarter are so low.
YoungWoong Jaejoong, Xiah Junsu and Micky Yoochun, no longer a part of the team after filing a lawsuit against their agency due to problems with their exclusive contract, have now formed the group ‘JYJ’ and those remaining, U-Know Yunho and Choikang Changmin, have decided to continue their activities under the name TVXQ.
SM released their quarterly report on the 16th which stated that the enterprise’s first quarter net sales, business profits and net profits were 19.3 billion Won, 2.3 billion Won and 1 billion Won respectively. Last year’s first quarter net sales, business profits and net profits were 22.6 billion Won, 10.2 billion Won and 8.5 billion Won respectively. Their business profits have reduced by 80% in a matter of one year.
Analyst Lee Sang Hyun of Hi Investment Bonds said, “In the case of SM, an enterprise in the entertainment management industry, there is no need for ‘an alternation of joy and grief’ in their quarterly results,” and “In the case of their Japanese profits, which make up the largest portion of the enterprise’s yearly sales, the profit from the sales of albums and concerts are taken in by SM after an estimated six-month delay according to their contract with their Japanese counterpart.”
He continued to say, “It is true that SM’s first quarter results have significantly reduced relative to last year due to the fact that the profits from TVXQ’s activities two years ago contributed to last year’s first quarter results,” and “But Girls’ Generation have released their ‘Mr. Taxi’ album last month and are scheduled to perform in four cities while SHINee are experiencing high popularity and interest as well, meaning that we can expect a visible improvement in the near future.”
SHINee’s ‘Replay’ album, set to release on June 22nd in Japan, has already become the most reserved album on online sites such as HMV and Tower Records.
The analyst also added, “Of the 10 billion Won that SM earned in net profits in the first quarter of 2010, approximately 8 billion Won came from net profits earned by TVXQ which shows that Japanese sales have a great impact on SM’s net profits,” and “As the influence of K-POP strengthens in Japan, Girls’ Generation has begun their activities in Japan, meaning that we can expect a visible improvement in the near future.”
He also said, “The second quarter will be better than the first quarter, and the second half of the year will see an increase in overseas royalties.”

Big Bang's 'Love & Hope' Concert Review in Josei Seven Magazine

BIGBANG
[Don't go to Japan]
Korea’s cry is beyond
On May 10th at Osaka Hall, BIGBANG’s “Love and Hope Tour 2011″ began.
“This time, it was hard to come to Japan, but we came to keep our promise with everyone.”
With these words that V.I (20yrs) said, the venue with 20,000 fans cried with excitement and their delightfulness climbed to the peak. The venue was hyped up, some people were too touched so they even shed a tear. There is a profound reason why these words were emphasized for all 3 days. The promise that V.I talked about is when they had a tour last February, they promised “We’ll come again.” to fans.
In order to keep this promise, BIGBANG members announced the “Love and Pain Tour 2011″. The plans they originally made at that moment was that the concerts would be held in Tokyo, Yokohama and some other places but they adjusted their plans because of the eartquake which happened in the Eastern Japan on March 11th. Many people voiced out their worries about this trip because BIGBANG’s tour might have had to be cancelled.
But they said “Because Japan is having such a critical situation, we would like to give messages of encouragement and hope to those who suffered.”
They thought about the idea again and announced that the tour title would be changed from “Love and Pain” to “Love and Hope” which made their Japanese fans feel good. However, their Japanese tour was still in face of oppositions from Korea.
“They are our never-ending singers, and we can’t let BIGBANG who are Korean citizens go to Japan because of the serious condition. We want the Japan tour to be cancelled.”
About 7500 fans had voiced out their opposition to the entertainment company and their record label. The company announced that their stay would be shortened from 2 months to 2 weeks but it still could not calm the Korean fans down. Nevertheless, BIGBANG arrived on May 2nd. Leader G-Dragon said in the meeting on the first day of their tour.
“We hope that they’ll understand that it’s safe because have arrived here safely. Japan and Korea are neighbor countries, we must join hands to reconstruct the road for our future.” he said that in order to let the Korean fans to understand why they had chosen to go to Japan and he wanted to share his feelings towards Japan, too.
So, this is how the tour happened. It was a really hot evening when the time wasn’t only enjoyed by the fans but also other celebrities. Famous faces were spotted, from idols to comedians, such as AKB48′s Maeda Atsuko (19yrs old ) and Shinoda Mariko (25yrs old), Mizuhara Kiko (20yrs old), Katou Miriya (22yrs old), Sasaki Nozomi (23yrs old), Aoyama Thelma (23yrs old), Imada (45yrs old), ORIENTAL RADIO’s Fujimoto (28yrs old), TANPOPO, and V6. About the audience and the stages in the performances,we can say it was the best and was avid as a flashy lake, the good parts are as the following…
[FIRST DAY] The concert started with a shocking performance of G-Dragon smashing a guitar. The venue looked like a dance floor since there was a swamp of people holding their penlights.
TOP (23yrs) said in front of the crowd of hyper fans, “Osaka was hot but TOKYO is also hot!”. SOL said that G-Dragon hurt his foot at the Osaka concert, then G-Dragon said “It hurts a bit, but I’m alright!”.
The maknae, V.I said “Today, it’s friday the 13th. Isn’t it scary?” for some reasons. Because he was kind of annoying, SOL grabbed his neck and led him to the exit. And by seeing this scene, everyone laughed a lot.
TOP joked next. After G-Dragon cooly said “Let’s move to the next song, CAFE.”, TOP asked “Is there any ice coffee?” which made the venue hyped up even more.

[SECOND DAY]V.I’s new impersonation for this tour is revealed.
“It’s alright in Disneyland! It’s called Mickey? I’m Mickey too! Dodosuko suko suko LOVE chu nyu♥”
To be honest, V.I’s impersonation didn’t look much like that of Tanoshingo. After watching his impersonation, the other members just smiled awkwardly. But only D-LITE (22yrs) said “Amazing! That was good!” with a grin.
D-LITE who teased V.I, was then totally obsessed in the world of his solo song afterwards and he has displayed how beautiful his voice is to the audience. There were fans who were crying because of his touching performance. SOL, who also sang his solo songs took off his jacket in the middle of his performance and wore a tank top only. It was stunning and it made the venue heated up even more.
[THIRD DAY]For three days, G-Dragon kept enduring his injury and showed us his great performance but he has worsened his injury by all of these; therefore,in the encore stage, he could barely walk.
V.I who was teased the day before, took a segway on stage for G-Dragon. Then G-Dragon sat on it and continued his performance. The brotherly love that we can find in this group is probably one of their charms.
When they were performing their last song, TOP shouted “Tokyo, Don’t Cry!”, and SOL also said “Our concerts have come to an end today. We are sad about it, too. But we’ll meet again.”.
“When you reach home, please call me because I’m worried.” V.I joked until the end and therefore, G-Dragon hit his head with his fist. We have listened to the best songs and laughed to the ultmost level in ”Love & Hope” .We felt the love and hope because the five members were there.

ZE:A’s “Be My Girl” deemed as ‘unsuitable for minors’

Following the ban of X-5’s “Fantasy yesterday, ZE:A’s “Be My Girl” has been added to the list because it has been deemed as ‘unsuitable for minors’ by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family.

The track is from their first official album, “Lovability“, and it’s received a parental advisory sticker because a part of the lyrics stated, “Be my girl tonight.”
The ministry explained that it was too sexually suggestive.
Representatives of Star Empire stated, “‘Be My Girl’ has been deemed unfit for minors and will no longer be sold to those under the age of 19. Whether we will edit the lyrics or not is still undecided.”
Songs that are judged as ‘harmful media to the youth’ cannot be sold to minors under the age of 19, and also cannot be aired on television channels before 10 PM.
Netizens said, “So many songs have ‘be my girl’ in them, the standards are really confusing lately”, and “Exactly what part of those lyrics are sexually suggestive? What are they even thinking?”
